Introduction
Africa is as unique as it gets. You have the biggest deserts in this continent as well as the biggest jungles, sometimes even all of them in the same country like Cameroon which is blessed for having all of the African climate zones in it!
You’ll get surprised by opening Africa’s category and reading about all of those beautiful diverse countries in the most underrated continent, Africa!
So, time to get on the road, exploring our next destination, Mauritania.
Recent history of Mauritania
Like a few other African countries, Mauritania had become a French colony until November 28, 1960, when they declared as an independent nation.
There were a few coup d’état in Mauritania. One of them was shortly after people had the chance to elect their next president democratically! But the politicians are still trying to deliver a better future for people.
Mauritania was one of the last countries that set up Anti-Slavery rules which are not respected yet, as some of the black residents are still being held as Slaves, either by Arab residents or by another black fellow! One the other hand, there are some organizations out there that are helping slaves to stand up on their feet and start a better life.
People in Mauritania
Most people are either Arabic or African descendants. Most of them live on the Western side of the country, as the rest is deserted. They speak Arabic with Mauritanian accent that has some French in it and their second language is French, because of being a French colony for a while.
People are generally hospitable and love having guests. They usually eat a lot for lunch, then lay down and chill as there’s not much to do around the town.

I did a report on Mauritania when I was in grade 7 and since then I’d really love to go there someday. It just amazes me
It is truly an amazing country, but you didn’t miss a lot since Namibia is so cool and unique itself!
Of course, home will always be home. I guess Mauritania was/is the next African country I’d like to visit😎
I visited in ’93. It’s obviously changed a lot as it was definitely not geared up for tourists or foreign visitors back then.
Right. The world changes fast!
