Introduction
Africa is an interesting place, but if you’re going to travel as a backpacker, you need to gain skills and go step by step for many reasons like understanding the cultural differences, level of amenities expectation, getting used to the street foods, and a lot more.
For most backpackers who are willing to start exploring the real Africa, Ghana is the best country to start with, wanna know why? Read this post to figure out!
Recent History of Ghana
Ghana was colonized by the UK for a few years until they became independent on March 6, 1957.
The government could manage to keep the country united and walk towards the democratic path. Ghana and Botswana are the first African countries that became democratic and a good example for other African states.
People in Ghana
People in Ghana are of African descendants. There ‘s a minority of white people as well, mostly British and everyone in Ghana speaks English.
More than %90 of Ghanaians are Christian and they are quite religious. On Sundays, you’d see them wearing their best clothes, going to the Church.
They’re generally happy. You can easily make them sing and dance!

What to do in Ghana
Accra in Ghana
Ghana’s capital, Accra is modern and flashy, just like any other Western urban area which is a blessing for a West African nation.

Kakum National Park in Ghana
This park was established by the local people, not the government! And it’s one of the very few African National parks with a canopy bridge.

Cape Coast Castle in Ghana
Cape Coast Castle was built by Slave traders. It was built by Portuguese businessmen. It’s a good site to see the slavery history in Africa.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum in Ghana
It is in Downtown Accra (Ghana’s capital) and was dedicated to the prominent Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah. The architect made the building looking like the bottom of a sword as a peace symbol, as well as putting a star on top which means unity.

Labadi Beach in Ghana
Ghana has a coastline with beautiful beaches. Labadi Beach is the most famous beach in Ghana as well as the busiest. Some resorts in the area offer private spaces to enjoy if you’re not the crowd’s fan!

Thank you for your kind words! 😊
I have always admired the serenity and beauty of Ghana. I was totally dissapointed that one of its’ citizens thought the best way to resolve an alleged land dispute was to demolish Nigeria High Comission Staff Quarters.
Right! I know what you’re talking about! 😣
This is great, Indeed Ghana is great I am an Ivorian and I have been living in Ghana for the past 8 years. At the beginning, the transition was not easy because of the language but now I am very much okay, comfortable and secured. https://wordpress.com/home/mariadebosslady.wordpress.com

Wow! Good for you! How did you like it?
It was wonderful and quite similar to where I was just next door in RCI. The people were warm and friendly. It didn’t seem that different then to me. Lovely sunny weather, lush coastal scenery, beautiful array of foods in the vibrant markets.
Beautifully described!
Thanks😊

It looks like a cool city, and the beaches are beautiful! I’m no backpacker, but Ghana looks like a great place to visit even if I don’t go backpacking.
It is a fabulous country to showcase Africa to you.

I’m not sure I would be able to work up the courage to walk across the canopy bridge. I am really enjoying your blog!
It’s a safe bridge, don’t worry. It connects 6 giant trees together.
Glad to know you enjoyed it.
