Recent history of Mauritania

Like a few other African countries, Mauritania had become a French colony until November 28, 1960, when they declared as an independent nation.
There were a few coup d’état in Mauritania. One of them was shortly after people had the chance to elect their next president democratically! But the politicians are still trying to deliver a better future for people.
Mauritania was one of the last countries that set up Anti-Slavery rules which are not respected yet, as some of the black residents are still being held as Slaves, either by Arab residents or by another black fellow! One the other hand, there are some organizations out there that are helping slaves to stand up on their feet and start a better life.

People in Mauritania

Most people are either Arabic or African descendants. Most of them live on the Western side of the country, as the rest is deserted. They speak Arabic with Mauritanian accent that has some French in it and their second language is French, because of being a French colony for a while.
People are generally hospitable and love having guests. They usually eat a lot for lunch, then lay down and chill as there’s not much to do around the town.

Also known as “Guelb er Richât“, This exposed 40 km dome is in the Saharan side of Mauritania. It’s shaped is exactly like an eye. Some people even call it “Eye of Africa”
Its unique shape drove attention after looking at the satellite images.

This national park is a heaven for those who like bird watching as some birds such as Flamingos and Pelicans migrate there every year. It’s also one of the best places in Africa for fishing.

Being a part of a Chinese-built two-story building, this Museum has The archaeological collections from the Stone age, as well as some cultural objects that belong to Mauritian society.
The building is also home to the Mauritanian Manuscripts Conservation Center and the Mauritanian Institute of Scientific Research.
