Recent History of The Gambia
Despite most other African nations, The Gambia was colonized by the UK which they let go on February 18, 1965.
The government is sort of democratic. It maintained a good relationship with Britain and its neighbors like Senegal.
People in The Gambia
More than %90 of The Gambians are Muslim while there’s a minority of Christians.
People are always smiling in this country which was the reason they received the title of “The smiling Coast”. There’s also another reason behind it! If you go back to the maps and look at Senegal, it looks like a guy’s head and The Gambia plays his teeth’ role!
What to do in the Gambia
Monkey Park in The Gambia
Bijilo Forest Park is home to two species of Monkeys. You don’t need a guide when you enter and the trail is easy to walk through. Monkeys are used to the tourists and friendly but don’t forget to buy some peanut and bananas for the monkeys, otherwise, they would ignore you!
Senegambia Craft Market in The Gambia
This is where they make the original woodcarvings, from small to large and you can learn and watch how they are handcrafted. Don’t forget to bargain as this market is a touristic place and the prices are higher than the local prices.
A lot of the sellers would ask you to go to their spaces and look at their handcrafts, then be prepared for it!
Beaches in The Gambia
The Gambia has around 80 km of coastline. The beaches are beautiful and you’ll find a few ones to crash at and relax, but don’t forget that The weather is usually too hot and humid!

Do you know why it is shaped so oddly? I think does it follow a river or something like that? I don’t remember.
Exactly. when Britain was drawing the borders between Senegal and The Gambia, They drew it around the river.
Now, almost all of the border is unprotected, the only place that a border control exists is when you’re driving on the road that connects these two countries.
Gambia…a place I haven’t been…Looks fabulous. Is it safe?
It is pretty safe.
The only con I noticed is the sex tourism! A lot of Westerners go there to hook up with young locals!
