Recent history of Slovakia
Slovakia, a part of Czechoslovakia
In recent history, Slovakia was a part of a large country called the Czechoslovak Republic from 1918 to 1939 and then a part of (somewhat) similar country called Czechoslovakia from 1945 until 1990.
Velvet Revolution | Slovakia’s independence from Czechoslovakia
After WW II, Slovakia which was a part of Czechoslovakia became a Communist country but in 1993, people came to the streets and protested for their freedom peacefully which led to a non-violent transition from Communism towards democracy which became famous as the Velvet Revolution!
Finally, Slovakia gained its full independence from Czechoslovakia on 1 January 1993
Slovakia joining the EU
After a few years of negotiation with the EU, Slovakia could become an EU member on 1 May 2004. Now, the currency in Slovakia is euro, just like most other EU members and Slovak citizens enjoy having the freedom of movement in the EU zone for working, living, and studying.
People in Slovakia
Out of 5.4 population of Slovakia, more than 80% are identified as Slovak. Hungarians are the largest ethnic minority with 8.5% of Slovakia’s population.
Even though the official language in Slovakia is Slovak, the country has one of the highest rates of bilinguals and trilinguals in the EU as most people in Slovakia can speak Czech and other European languages. Be rest assured that you’d have no problem communicating with Slovakia’s people in English!

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia looks like a fairy tale city, straight out of the Disney land because of its famous icon called Bratislava castle.
The area of ​​the castle complex itself is widely used by residents and visitors of Bratislava for walks with the possibility of nice views of the historic city center, the Danube, and the Petržalka district.
SlavÃn, a war monument in Bratislava, Slovakia
SlavÃn is a Bratislava memorial to Soviet soldiers killed during the Second World War in western Slovakia. Together with the cemetery of the fallen in the First World War in Petržalka, it represents the only military cemetery in Bratislava.
Hlavné námestie in Bratislava, Slovakia
Hlavné námestie or The main square is a square in Bratislava in the Old Town. It is the central square of this part of the city and one of the most famous squares in Bratislava.

I went to Bratislava many years ago and finally made it to the eastern part of the country a few years ago where we spend a few days in Kosice and another couple of days on the country side. The country side was very nice and low key without many tourist.

We did have a great time ☺ for the moment All our travel plans are very uncertain so we Dont know when we will get back. But hopefully things clear up soon and we get back to normal 😊
Strange, that you mention only Bratislavs, there are many other interesting towns and villages till the very Eastern border. And the beautiful mountains of the High Tatra not to forget. You can climb on Mt. Rysi or take the cable train on Mt. Gerlachlovsky Stit. The hiking trails whereever, are always well marked and interesting.
Right, but the purpose of the post was to give the reader a glimpse of what Slovakia is like.
