Eswatini, When Swaziland changed its name!

Is Eswatini an English speaking country? What language do people speak in Eswatini? Where is Eswatini’s capital? What is the tourism in Eswatini like? Where is Eswatini on the map? Is it dangerous to visit Eswatini? Where is Eswatini? Is Eswatini a country or a city? What is the religion of the population in Eswatini? What to do in Eswatini? What is the history of Eswatini? Why did Swaziland change to eSwatini? What does eSwatini mean? How many wives can you have in Swaziland?

Introduction

This is not new to see new countries popping up around the world like South Sudan, Kosovo, and North Macedonia! But we’re not used to existing countries to change their name, are we?

Eswatini’s king made a statement when he first announced the new name, “Whenever we go abroad, people refer to us as Switzerland.” and people were like, “Why not focusing on improving the economy instead?” and the King ignored them! At the end of the day, he’s the one who travels abroad frequently, not his people! That’s why they don’t know the importance of this matter!!

Anyways, that’s not the case. this country is cool whether we call it Eswatini or Swaziland!

Let’s scratch the surface, shall we?

People in Eswatini

People are the coolest part of Eswatini. They are of African tribes and still live the traditional way like their ancestors. They speak Swazi at home and English at school that makes them officially bilingual. The third language is Portuguese.

What to do in Eswatini

Get to know the Eswatini culture

Eswatini is one of the last countries on earth that people are still keeping up with their ancestors’ way of living, especially in the villages! They wear handmade clothes and build their houses out of raw materials they have which keeps them warm when it’s cold outside and cool when it’s hot outside! They have a special song for every single daily task like eating, sleeping, and working!

Although no one had ever trained them, They got great voices!

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Eswatini

This area is Eswatini’s oldest protected area where you find animals, hike, enjoy the scenery, and see the cool villagers we just talked about, above!

There’s accommodation for international visitors, as well as tours by foot, car, and even horse!

Swaziland National Museum in Eswatini

This Museum is well organized (for an undeveloped country). You’ll find an abstract of Eswatini’s culture. They have various programs, like a radio show which airs once a month, a photography room, special tours for students and they even celebrate the International Museum day by a different theme every year!

You’ll find more information on their website.

  1. I never heard that Swaziland changed its name until sometime last year where I was Wikipedia-surfing and I saw a link to someplace called Eswatini and I clicked because I didn’t know where that was.

And you mentioned North Macedonia… I believe they changed their name recently too. They were one of the countries formed from the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 90s and were usually just called Macedonia, but the region of Greece directly to the south of them also calls itself Macedonia, so they were officially called the “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.” I remember watching an Olympics opening ceremony once and the announcers were explaining why Macedonia was entering the stadium alphabetically with the F countries. The new name of North Macedonia was to make their name less awkward while still recognizing that they are not the only Macedonia.
