Introduction

When we think about Asia, It’s mostly either China, Thailand, Malaysia, or the Philippines but there’s a lot more to this Continent than these countries, for example, no one knows that the second densely populated country is in Asia or that there’s a Portuguese speaking country over there!

Today we’ll be talking about the least known southeast Asian country, Laos!

Let’s start with the country’s recent history!

Recent history of Laos

Laos was (Sort of) colonized by France and gained its independence on July 19, 1949. A while after that, Vietnam took control over the northern parts of Laos which led the US to heavily bombard it to defeat Vietnam during the Vietnam war. Laos is now officially the most bombarded country per capita in history. After the war, people started recycling the bombshells in creative ways like using them as a flower pot or making necklaces!

In 1975 an armed group could defeat the ex-King of Laos by getting help from the Soviet Union that made Laos the Communist country it is today! But it’s not something like the North Korean kind of Communism! Everyone’s free to move and as a tourist, you are allowed to visit whatever you want!

The Laotian government has a good relationship with Western countries such as the US, France, Australia, and Sweden. (That’s considered so cool, considering that we’re talking about a Communist government)

People in Laos

Laotian demographic is made up of a few tribes, with the Lao tribe being the largest group with more than 3.5 million people out of 7 million Laotians.
Despite having a Communist government, most people are Buddhist and practice Buddhism just like any other Buddhist country.
About 1/3 of the country can communicate in French because of the education system and because of that, French tourists make up the majority of Laos’s European tourists.

What to do in Laos

Kuang Si Falls in Laos

Also known as Kuang Xi Falls, these three-tiered waterfalls start from shallow pools and mild steeps that end to a 60 meters waterfall at its final destination!

Buddha Park in Laos

Also known as Xieng Khuan (Spirit city), this park is home to more than 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. It’s not a worshiping place, only used for tourism purposes.

Patuxai in Laos

This beautiful Monument is built in honor of those who fought for Laos’s independence from France and it’s located in the center of Vientiane, the country’s capital and largest city.

Pha That Luang Vientiane in Laos

Being Laos’s national symbol and the pride for its people, this Buddhist temple is entirely covered by gold and just like Patuxai, located in the center of Vientiane (Not too far away from Patuxai).
